Your audience is all important in your content. Where is your target audience ? The people that you are writing for will want to know that you have taken them into account when you are writing. You can see from other places on this website that you have to give your readers a reason to read on. But as a content writer (and this is what you are if you are writing your website words or a blog) then you need to consider the needs of the potential audience when you are writing.

As a basic example, if you are a UK business trying to sell ‘nappies’ and ‘dummies’ to the US market then you will fall flat. They won’t know what you are talking about as they use the terms ‘diapers’ and ‘pacifiers’ instead.

What does this mean for a business?

This is just one area that you need to ensure you have researched fully before you start to write. The words on the page are designed to-

  • Help you in the search rankings
  • Start a meaningful conversation with your audience
  • Inform them about what you do
  • Persuade them to buy

And it is the little things that can make a big difference when it comes to your content. The vocabulary you use is one thing (as we have seen above) but there are other areas such as sentence structure and cultural references that help people to understand what you are trying to say. Think about the different factors that make up your audience-

Their age will determine if they understand the cultural references you use and will give you a tome that you might want to develop to appeal to this market.  If your target market is in their teens then they will respond in a very different way to a target market of over 60’s. This helps you to determine the first step of answering the question ‘ Where is your target audience ?’

Their country will give you a starting point for the language you use. Consumers in the United States are more used to bold claims from their marketing than they are in the United Kingdom.  They obviously watch different TV shows, follow different sports and have different politicians.  Even in our interconnected world there are many differences from nation to nation.

Their language is another major factor in how effective your website might be. If you need a website that operates in different languages then you need to hire a professional rather than rely on an automated translation service. Your readers will thank you.

Their spare time will determine how much information you throw at them. If your target market is busy families then they won’t generally have time to sit and read page after page of your content. Their busy lives mean that you have to capture their attention and deliver your message quickly.

Where is your target audience?

So the place that your target audience occupy really makes a difference to how effective your words can be. Think about how you communicate and you will see the results improve. Think about where they are and how you can make those vital connections.
