November is National Novel Writing Month in the US, or you may find it on the internet shortened to NaNoWriMo. The idea behind it is to write intensively for a whole month to get your novel written in basic format. So many people believe that they have a novel inside of them just waiting to come out. I like to use this to draw inspiration – I am not just a County Durham content writer! As a novel writer North East I write a large number of words every day of my life. This movement gets you to write it all in one month so you have the basis of a novel done in as short a period of time as possible. Inspiration for novel writing can come from many places.
So if you want to write a novel of 90,000 words then you write 3,000 words per day every day in November. The idea is that you just write. You don’t stop and go back to make corrections yo anything. The spelling, the grammar, the punctuation, the flow of the story and the tenses and persons that you write in will all remain in a raw format. When you get to the end of the month an have this raw novel the first thing to do is to take a small break from writing. Getting 3,000 words down per day every day will take its toll on you if you are not used to it. I average around 30,000 words per week working on this as my occupation. This is a great way to get inspiration for novel writing to get you going.
Then you will need to go back and make all the edits that will turn the raw words into something readable. Editing is a highly important part of the writing process and will turn what you have into something more polished and readable. You will need to look at the basics such as spelling and grammar but editing is about much more than that. Every section needs to be looked at in terms of whether it works in the larger context of the book or not. If it works then keep it, edit it any maybe extend it. If it does not then remove it or alter it. To write a novel that you will be proud of then you have to get each and every part of it working. If not, then one part can drag the whole piece down. Don’t get stuck – find inspiration for novel writing wherever you can.
In my line of work as a novel writer North East I am currently writing two novels, one for myself and one for someone else so I will use the daily targets that the NaNoWriMo structure brings to make sure that I bring these in on time. If you are writing your own novel then please get in touch or leave a comment below. I love to keep in touch with other writers and hear what you have to say.
