What is the trail of your content?

I speak to lots of people as a County Durham content writer about the power of the spoken word. Many people come to me and ask me – ‘ How does content make you money ?’ There are different ways to do this, and we will have a look at the main ones in this article. Content can generate income on its own or can be a road to drive traffic to somewhere that makes you money. The way that you use content to generate money will depend on what you have already. For example, if you have a website that sells products, your content will give away information and then drive people to buy on your site. I have recently written a guide on alternative uses for the French Press or cafetiere and then it prompts people to go to my client’s website that sells…. French Presses. The fact is that good quality content that is used in this way can engage readers and give them a reason to buy from you.

Content that leads somewhere

As in the example above, content that gives people a reason to visit another page is one way to make money. We will often do this without realising. You may have a link to your website at the bottom of your email, you may have your sales page prompted on your social media posts or information about your services in a blog. All of these will bring you traffic if you use them in the right way. A simple message saying ‘please check out our website’ is a good start but I’m sure you can come up with something better than that. It is the first consideration when thinking abut How does content make you money ?

As a County Durham content writer I help small business all the time to make the most of what they write. A email signature or a well worded invoice are all part of your content marketing efforts and should be structured in a way that drives business.  For instance, an invoice that states at the bottom how valuable your relationship is with a client will prompt them to stay with you and not look elsewhere. Just a few short words will make a big difference to how people view you.

Let’s dissect the example I used earlier. The articles on alternative uses for a French Press did two main things. they informed people who already had one to make the most of it. It can be an item that is bought and then left in the kitchen cupboard for years on end just gathering dust. But it also helped to persuade people that were thinking about buying a French Press (either for the first time or to replace one) and sway them towards making that purcahse. The  as they made that decision there was a prompt to check out the website. The content owner (my client) gets a steady stream of clients from this source – and the clients get more use from their purcahse.

Stand alone content

You can make money from content that leads nowhere. If you have a blog for example that speaks to a large audience about a common subject then people will pay you to advertise on that blog. Google AdWords is the most popular of these but there are others available. From the words and phrases used in your blog, the advertising agent (such as Google AdWords) will place relevant links in specified places of your content. If people click on these then you will be paid. This is very different to the first kind of content, but is a valuable answer to the question ‘ How does content make you money ?’

Similarly the Amazon Affiliate program allows you to select items, categories or special deals and feature them in your content. If people click through to Amazon and make a purchase (not necessarily the product that you linked to, but any purcahse on that visit) then you earn a commission for their custom. This is ideal for people that review certain products and then link to Amazon. It will drive people to the right products that are linked to what you have to say.
