Content writing tips for beginners - let content help your business

Content is king. people want the best content for their website, blog or social media feeds but don’t always know where to start. Getting the right content published on your website can make a huge difference to your search engine rankings and your customer engagement. Here are my content writing tips for beginners –

Keep it simple

Nobody wants to read a complicated article to understand what your business is all about. Pick a single subject and write about it well. If you try with your content to be all things to all people, you will end up being nothing to anyone. The words that you write about your business will  set the scene. If that scene is one where your prospects understand exactly what you do, then you are on to a winner. If that scene is messy and confusing, then that’s what people will take away when they think about you.

Take a lesson from Donald Rumsfeld and the entire George W. Bush administration on why you should keep it simple . This is the best of my content writing tips –

Don’t write too much

Hand in hand with the first of my content writing tips is a lesson on how long a blog should be. It is like ‘how long is a piece of string?’ or ‘how many words should there be in a novel?’ There isn’t an exact answer, but you should always consider it to be –

Long enough to get your point across. Short enough to hold the attention of your reader.

If you are happy with 200 words, then publish it at 200 words. If you feel it needs more, then write some more. If you think that it might be better spread over 2 or 3 posts, then do that. Don’t think that there is a formula you have to fit into.

Target a reader

Not just one person, that’s not going to do a great deal for your content. But think about the type of people you want to read this. If you are writing for a business then think about the profile of your target buyers –

  • How old are they?
  • What else are they into?
  • What language should you use

If you know who you are writing for, then it makes the whole thing a lot easier.

Content writing tips for beginners - target your market

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Some people think that their content has to provide all the answers. If you are not seen as all-knowing, then why would you be writing about a particular topic in the first place? Do you know what? it’s OK to not have all the answers. Pose some questions, talk it over and see where it takes you. There is nothing wrong in saying, “I don’t know, but I’ll work it out.” people will respect you more for that than bluffing.

Your content can open a lot of doors if you know where to start. I hope that some of the principles I have discussed here will help. Content writing tips for beginners come in all shapes and sized – this one is short and to the point.
