How Do I Get an Online Presence?

There are so many places that you can be an online presence that you could be overwhelmed by the options. When you think of an place on the internet to promote your business, then the first thoughts might be –

  • Investing in a website
  • Getting on social media
  • Listing on directories
  • Writing a blog

And there could be value in any one of these, depending on your business – or, more importantly, depending on your customers. An online presence comes in many forms. You just need to know the right one for you. Let’s take a a website and you can develop an online presence – and see some of the results that others have generated.

Online Presence: A Website

If you already have a website then you might question why it isn’t bringing you business before you go any further. Having a website isn’t the solution. It is what the site does that actually makes a difference. The content you have on the site needs to do two things –

  1. Tell Google and the other search engines what you want to be found for
  2. Let people who land there know that you can fulfil their needs and wants

This can be  delicate balancing act at times, but nothing too onerous. The first part pretty much means you have t include some simple phrases on your site. If you are a carpenter in Darlington, then you must use the phrases –

  • carpenter Darlington
  • Darlington carpentry
  • County Durham carpenter
  • carpenter North East

And others. This lets Google know what you want to be found for. When people search one of these terms, that’s when you want to appear at the very top of the search engine rankings. The second part is where you let people know what you do. They will read a bit on your site before they go any further. This is where you reassure them that you are the best carpenter for the job. Don’t go overboard, but make sure you have images of the work you have done along with the words that explain why you are the best choice.

Simple? I think so.

Online Presence: Results

This website you are on now has been optimised for a few search terms relating to content writing with different industries and content writing in different parts of the North East. This is because I am based in the North East and want to work locally plus these are the industries I have an expertise in and at to work alongside.

These include –

I have worked extensively in these fields and can help to understand customers here from this experience. But that doesn’t mean I can’t work with other industries, but these are where I want to be found. With this in mind, I am 2nd in the organic searches (the ones that are not adverts) for ‘content marketing for network marketers.’ This means I get a stack of enquiries for this search term. Job done. You can have the same if only you tell Google what you want to be found for.

This means that your online presence drives new customers to your business – and it is working all the time for you.
